# Does a liquid biopsy replace a tissue biopsy?

Usually not — it complements one. The National Cancer Institute describes a liquid biopsy as a blood test for cancer cells or tumor DNA (ctDNA) that can help find cancer, guide treatment, and track how a cancer responds over time. But a tissue biopsy — taking a piece of the tumor and examining it under a microscope — remains the standard way to confirm a diagnosis and read features a blood test cannot. A liquid biopsy can be especially useful when tissue is hard to obtain, to look for specific mutations that match targeted drugs, or to watch for change during treatment, and a negative liquid biopsy does not rule cancer out.
