# What is Adjuvant therapy?

> Additional treatment given after the main treatment (usually surgery) to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.

Adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or hormone/targeted therapy is given after surgery has removed the visible tumor, aimed at eliminating any cancer cells too small to detect. Whether it's recommended, and which type, depends on the pathology results from surgery — this is one reason a tumor board reviews cases after, not only before, an operation.
