# What is Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD)?

> A complication of allogeneic (donor-cell) transplant where the donor's immune cells attack the recipient's own tissues.

Because allogeneic transplant introduces a donor's immune system into the recipient's body, that new immune system can sometimes recognize the recipient's healthy tissue as foreign and attack it. Preventing and managing GvHD is a standard, expected part of allogeneic transplant care, monitored closely during the isolation-ward period.
