# What is VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery)?

> Minimally invasive chest surgery performed through several small incisions using a thoracoscopic camera, instead of a large open incision.

VATS is used for lung procedures such as lobectomy, allowing the surgeon to operate while viewing the chest cavity on a monitor. Compared with open thoracotomy, it is generally associated with less pain and a faster return of lung function for eligible tumors.
