What does remission mean in cancer (and is it the same as cure)?
According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI), remission means that the signs and symptoms of your cancer are reduced. Remission can be partial or complete: in a complete remission, all signs and symptoms of cancer have disappeared. Importantly, remission is not necessarily the same as cure. NCI explains that some cancer cells can remain in your body for many years after treatment, and these cells may cause the cancer to come back one day. NCI also notes that if you remain in complete remission for 5 years or more, some doctors may say you are cured, though the two terms are not identical. Ask your own oncology team what remission means for your specific situation. This is general information, not personal medical advice.
