Kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma)

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults — a cancer that arises from the tissue of the kidney and forms in the lining of the tiny tubes (tubules) that filter blood and make urine.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults. It is a carcinoma that arises from the renal parenchyma — the working tissue of the kidney — forming in the lining of the tiny tubes (tubules) inside the kidneys. Common signs can include blood in the urine (hematuria), flank pain, and a lump (palpable mass) in the side or lower back. Radical nephrectomy (surgical removal of the kidney) is the standard treatment procedure.

Staged with the TNM staging system (tumor size/extent, lymph node involvement, and metastasis), grouped into stages I–IV.
