PD-L1 (programmed death-ligand 1) is an immune-regulating protein, encoded by the human CD274 gene, that helps control the activation and proliferation of the immune system's T cells.

PD-L1 (programmed death-ligand 1), also known as CD274 or B7-H1, is a protein (about 290 amino acids, ~33 kDa) encoded by the human CD274 gene. According to the NCI Thesaurus, this protein is involved in mediating both the activation and proliferation of T cells, which are part of the immune system. It acts as one of the immune-checkpoint proteins that help keep immune responses in balance.

NCI: some tumors turn down the T-cell response by producing large amounts of PD-L1, and PD-1 and its partner protein PD-L1 are the targets of a class of drugs called immune checkpoint inhibitors — which is why PD-L1 is examined in cancer.
