What CAR T-cell therapy is

CAR T-cell therapy — short for chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy — is a type of immunotherapy in which a patient’s own T cells (a kind of immune cell) are changed in the laboratory so they will bind to and kill cancer cells. The U.S. National Cancer Institute explains the process: blood is drawn and passed through a machine that separates out the white blood cells, including T cells, and returns the rest to the patient (a step called leukapheresis); the gene for a special receptor — the chimeric antigen receptor — is added to those T cells; large numbers of the CAR T cells are grown; and they are given back to the patient by infusion. Which cancers it’s used for

The NCI states that CAR T-cell therapy is used to treat certain blood cancers, and that it is being studied for other types of cancer. It is not a general treatment for solid tumors. In practice, that means:

  • Certain leukemias. Notably some forms of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
  • Certain lymphomas. Several kinds of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, typically after other treatments have been tried.
  • Multiple myeloma. A cancer of plasma cells, for which specific CAR T-cell products exist.
  • Under study for more. Research is ongoing into additional cancers, but that is investigational — not established, routine care.

Availability in Turkey — the honest part
