What radiation therapy is

The U.S. National Cancer Institute describes radiation therapy as a cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumours. At low doses radiation is used to image the body; at the high doses used in treatment it damages the DNA of cancer cells so they stop dividing and die. Because those damaged cells are then cleared over days and weeks, tumours often keep shrinking for a time after the treatment course ends.   • Brachytherapy (internal radiation). A sealed radioactive source is placed in or right next to the tumour, so a high dose is delivered locally while it falls off sharply beyond the target.   • Systemic radioactive drugs. A radioactive substance is given by mouth or vein and travels through the body to reach cancer cells, a form of internal radiation used for specific cancers.
