Stomach cancer treatment in Istanbul, Turkey

Stomach (gastric) cancer is usually treated with surgery to remove part or all of the stomach — a gastrectomy with lymph node removal — combined with peri-operative chemotherapy given before and after surgery, and sometimes radiation. Testing the tumour for HER2 decides whether a targeted drug such as trastuzumab is added. Istanbul hospitals offer this full pathway, often at JCI-accredited, state-authorized centers and well below Western-European prices for the same protocol. Every price we show is an illustrative placeholder until verified partner-hospital quotes exist — and you pay the hospital directly, never us. What stomach cancer is

The U.S. National Cancer Institute describes stomach (gastric) cancer as cancer that forms in the lining of the stomach. Most cases are adenocarcinomas, which begin in the gland cells of the innermost layer and can grow outward through the stomach wall. The NCI lists infection with Helicobacter pylori, long-term stomach inflammation, smoking, a diet high in salted, smoked or pickled foods, and certain inherited conditions and family history among the risk factors.

Diagnosis usually involves an upper endoscopy with biopsy, and the extent of disease is worked out with CT imaging, endoscopic ultrasound and sometimes a staging laparoscopy. Because early stomach cancer often causes vague symptoms, the NCI notes it can be found at a more advanced stage. Tumour testing for HER2, and often PD-L1 and MSI status, now helps guide drug therapy. Browse the wider cancer types hub for related diagnoses.

Treatment options

The modalities the NCI lists for stomach cancer, and an honest note on each:

  • Surgery. The backbone of treatment for disease that can be removed — subtotal (partial) gastrectomy for tumours in part of the stomach, or total gastrectomy, both with removal of nearby lymph nodes. Very early tumours confined to the lining can sometimes be removed endoscopically.
  • Chemotherapy (peri-operative). Chemotherapy given both before and after surgery is a common approach, aiming to shrink the tumour first and treat any remaining disease afterward. Cost scales with the number of cycles.
  • Radiation therapy / chemoradiation. Radiation, sometimes combined with chemotherapy, is used in some plans — for example after surgery. Whether it applies depends on your stage and the surgical findings.
  • Targeted therapy and immunotherapy. For HER2-positive tumours, a targeted antibody such as trastuzumab may be added to chemotherapy; immunotherapy such as pembrolizumab or nivolumab is used for PD-L1-positive or MSI-high tumours. Which applies is decided by your tumour testing, not a template.

What it costs

There is no single stomach-cancer price, because the cost is driven by the extent of surgery (subtotal versus total gastrectomy), the number of chemotherapy cycles before and after surgery, whether radiation is used, and whether targeted or immunotherapy drugsare added — those are priced per cycle and can dominate the total. The hospital, verified

We don’t show a wall of smiling surgeons or a “ranked” list — those are the easiest things to fabricate. Instead, you’re matched to one state-authorized Istanbul partner hospital whose surgical and gastrointestinal oncology subspecialty fits your diagnosis, and you can verify its authorization against the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health’s own records and its JCI accreditation in JCI’s public directory before you commit. Named specialist profiles appear only when a verified, consented physician is behind the name. See the full guide to cancer hospitals in Istanbul and how to check one yourself.

Common questions

Can I get stomach cancer treatment in Turkey?

Yes. Istanbul hospitals provide the full gastric-cancer pathway the U.S. National Cancer Institute describes — surgery to remove part or all of the stomach (gastrectomy) with lymph node removal, peri-operative chemotherapy given before and after surgery, radiation or chemoradiation in some plans, and targeted or immunotherapy drugs where the tumour testing supports them. Many centers hold JCI accreditation and Turkish Ministry of Health state authorization, both of which you can check yourself before you commit. The honest first step is a free case review of your pathology and imaging so the plan is understood before you travel.

Why does HER2 testing matter for stomach cancer?

Because it decides whether a targeted drug is added. Per the NCI, some stomach cancers over-express the HER2 protein, and for HER2-positive tumours a targeted antibody such as trastuzumab can be combined with chemotherapy. Tumours are also often tested for PD-L1 and for MSI-high / mismatch-repair-deficient status, which can point to immunotherapy such as pembrolizumab or nivolumab. This testing is a standard part of the modern workup, and a case review will flag whether it has already been done on your reports. This is general information, not a treatment recommendation.

Will I need my whole stomach removed?

Not always. The NCI describes both subtotal (partial) gastrectomy, which removes the part of the stomach containing the tumour, and total gastrectomy, which removes the whole stomach — the choice depends mainly on where the tumour sits and how large it is. Very early tumours confined to the stomach lining can sometimes be removed endoscopically without open surgery. Which operation fits your case is a decision for a surgical-oncology team, and a case review will tell you what your reports do and don't yet establish about that.

How much does stomach cancer treatment cost in Istanbul?

There is no single figure, because the cost is driven by the extent of surgery (subtotal versus total gastrectomy), the number of chemotherapy cycles before and after surgery, whether radiation is used, and whether targeted or immunotherapy drugs are added — those drugs are priced per cycle and can dominate the total. Istanbul typically runs well below Western-European prices for the same protocol, but every figure OncologyIstanbul™ publishes today is an illustrative placeholder pending verified partner-hospital quotes, itemized so you can check a real written quote line by line.
