What HIPEC is
HIPEC is a form of heated chemotherapy delivered inside the abdomen during an operation. The U.S. National Cancer Institute explains that in HIPEC, warmed anticancer drugs are circulated through the abdomen to kill cancer cells that remain after surgery. Which cancers it’s considered for
HIPEC is used for certain cancers that affect the surface or lining of the abdomen — the peritoneum. The NCI links it to cancers arising from the appendix, the colon and rectum (colorectal), the ovary and the stomach, and to peritoneal mesothelioma, as well as to cancer that has spread to the lining of the abdomen. These are the situations where it is considered— not a guarantee it is the right choice for any one person.
- Appendix (appendiceal) cancers. Including tumors that spread mucin and disease across the peritoneal surface, where clearing the abdomen is the goal.
- Colorectal cancer with peritoneal spread. Selected cases where colon or rectal cancer has seeded the lining of the abdomen rather than distant organs.
- Ovarian cancer. Considered in certain patients as part of surgery for disease on the peritoneal surface.
- Stomach (gastric) cancer. Case by case, where disease is confined to the peritoneum and the team judges the visible tumor removable.
- Peritoneal mesothelioma. Cancer of the lining of the abdomen itself, where regional heated chemotherapy is one of the approaches.
