Proton therapy in Turkey

What proton therapy is

Proton therapy is a type of external radiation therapy that uses streams of protons — small, positively charged particles — to kill tumor cells. The U.S. National Cancer Institute explains that because a proton beam releases most of its energy at a specific depth and then stops, it can reduce the amount of radiation reaching healthy tissue near a tumor compared with standard x-ray (photon) radiation. Which cancers it’s considered for

The NCI lists proton therapy as being used for cancers of the head and neck and for tumors of organs such as the brain, eye, lung, spine and prostate, and it is also used to treat children because it may cause less damage to healthy tissue that is still growing. These are the situations where it is considered— not a guarantee it is the best choice for any one person.

  • Childhood cancers. Frequently discussed for children because sparing developing healthy tissue matters more when a patient is still growing.
  • Brain, spine and base-of-skull tumors. Tumors sitting next to the brainstem, spinal cord or optic structures, where limiting dose to nearby tissue is a priority.

  • Head and neck cancers. Tumors near salivary glands, nerves and other structures that standard radiation is harder to spare.

Availability in Turkey — the honest part

This is where a lot of medical-tourism marketing overreaches, so we won’t. Proton therapy can only be delivered at a dedicated, purpose-built proton center. The equipment is enormous and costly, so worldwide only a limited number of specialized facilities have it, and a hospital that treats cancer with standard radiation does not automatically offer proton therapy.
