Cancer treatment in Istanbul for patients from Nigeria

Getting from Nigeria to Istanbul
Flights connect Istanbul with Lagos and Abuja — some routings are direct at roughly 6–7 hours, others connect through a Gulf or European hub and take longer. Check current routing and total travel time directly with the airlines when you book.
For Nigerian ordinary passport holders, Turkey requires a visa obtained in advance — there is no ordinary e-visa or visa-on-arrival for most travelers, so you generally apply for a sticker visa at a Turkish diplomatic mission before you fly. A conditional single-entry e-visa may be available online only if you already hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit; most patients will not qualify and should plan for the embassy route (verified against mfa.gov.tr, 22 Jul 2026). Because the process and documents can change, check your own case against the visa & length-of-stay guide, apply early, and if your application needs a hospital invitation letter, request it directly from the hospital you choose.

Paying for treatment: private, or a government/NHIS referral
Most patients from Nigeria travel privately and pay the hospital directly. If instead you intend to seek public support — for example through a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) arrangement or a government 'treatment abroad' referral — the eligibility, process and paperwork are set entirely by your own health authority or scheme, so confirm the current requirements and any pre-approval steps with them directly before you travel, as we cannot determine, influence or guarantee any of it for you.
Plan the money side early. Naira exchange and foreign-currency limits can make paying an overseas hospital slow or complicated, and quotes are typically in a foreign currency, so speak to your bank about how you'll transfer funds and about any documentation they need. If you hold private or employer insurance, confirm in writing what applies — including pre-authorization, approved hospitals and required documents — before booking; we could not find a general provision that automatically reimburses elective treatment in Turkey, so please verify your own arrangement.
